I’ve seen the movie Moneyball (2011) many times. I’ll literally stop to watch it every single time it’s on television. While there are a couple different things I like about it, the biggest is that it’s one of the chillest movies I’ve ever seen. Like a valium in film form. It’s my happy place, my ASMR, my giant LED waterfall display at the nail spa in my neighborhood. While it’s true I’m a fan of baseball, I have also traditionally been half in, half out on most movies about baseball. And I tend to swing more towards baseball comedies like Major League (1989), Bull Durham (1988), and The Bad News Bears (1976) and away from the more serious stuff like Field of Dreams (1989) and Trouble With the Curve (2012). So, it’s surprising that a movie like Moneyball would enchant me so much being that it’s mostly a drama with some small moments of understated humor. There’s something quiet and meditative about it that really relaxes me. It’s also a fundamentally enjoyable movie about a semi-complicated subject that heads and non-heads can agree on. A great baseball film, but also a great film that just happens to be about baseball.
