"Oh shit, I think I saw that in human college once..." made me cackle. Human college!

Had a similar experience at a record sale recently when a young woman was perusing my partner's cassettes or 45s and asked me who Tom Petty was and what genre of music he played. And then another young guy asking about Billy Joel and being "excited to learn more about him." He was even from New York! I assumed they had Billy Joel printed on currency there. Just how ubiquitous those two dudes were on the radio for SO LONG (and even now? but who listens to the radio anymore, I guess?) that we couldn't even get away from knowing who they were. I felt like an alien myself.

Love hearing about your class; I would love to take it!

I just had flashbacks of racing to Movies Worth Seeing after being shown Maya Derek, Man Ray and Orson Welles films on the experimental film portion of Film 101. There was this one “Avant Garde” compilation VHS that had a whole bunch of them together. It’s so great to see you being the one to carry on this time honored tradition. Even if just one student went home and got on YouTube to look that stuff up and eventually stumbled on to Kenneth Anger and is now thinking about satanic cults - then you’ve changed the world 👏👏👏

God wouldn’t that be great. I showed them a still of Marjorie Cameron from Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome in the slideshow so hopefully that planted a seed 🙏🏽

As someone programming a cinema on a college campus, this is hitting far too close to home on a Sunday morning! Delayed release responses are sure to come out of your class, though.

But mainly I'm here to high five you for the Martin Arnold link! Love that film so much (his To Kill a Mockingbird one is great too). Another Austrian doing amazing things with found footage is Peter Tscherkassky. Outer Space, his riff on Barbara Hershey's The Entity, is one of the most amazing experimental films and a good entry point for folks interested in genre filmmaking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxQ3PucXg8k

"When I polled the class very early on on whether they’d ever seen a Wes Anderson film before and they all said no, everything basically went out the window. "

I took an intro film studies class last year and it was such a wild experience. Silence of the Lambs was on the syllabus and I thought surely everyone had seen it a billion times like I have. My professor asked who had never seen it and almost the entire class raised their hands. As much as I would have liked to see something new to me, watching people experience it for the first time was pretty amazing. The biker guy that sat next to me squirmed in his seat so much 😂

Yesterday I rearranged my lecture on the fly when I learned that some of my (very young adult) students did not know who Dolly Parton is. They know now.

"...the law of averages says at least one person had their mind forever blown, and by semester’s end, that’s why your class exists." I took a risk and used that photo of Egyptian Lover sitting in the back seat of a car talking on a giant, beige, early model cell phone in a lecture about the evolution of communications technology. I can't describe the looks I got from the class. But the next week, one of the students said he checked out Egyptian Lover and learned about the 808 for the first time. This does not rise to the level of having blown his mind, but it was gratifying.

Working in a freshman dorm on a college campus-the Grandma Winona had me literally laughing out loud.

I relate to feeling old af around these your adults or as I refer to them lovingly, “the kids”.

I have never felt more un-cool in my life.

Also, I would take your class in a heartbeat. Thanks for giving us insight into your teaching experiences. It’s so fun👏😀

Happy Holidays❣️

Damn Millie. I was not prepared for todays treatise on the generational divide. It feels particularly relevant since I found myself at an Adult Rock Camp this past weekend where I was far and away the oldest "adult" and my connection with the other "adults" was sadly lacking due to my stunted genX humor which is forever steeped in sarcasm, a form of communication I am sure is on par with Wes Anderson films in regard its relevancy among young adults of today.

Just to put it on the record, I would absolutely sign up for your master class.
